Musings at the intersection of business and life

You too can be a hip hop artist

Starting a Business
May 22, 2009 by Kathleen Allen

Although I have a background in music and have done my share of performing (in my previous career), I would never be confused with a hip-hop artist.  But that's OK because if I want to I can become one and actually get my original work showcased on MyCypher.com, all courtesy of entrepreneur Curtis Jewell.  In his own words, Curtis' business "is a dynamic social media platform that connects members of the Global Hip-Hop community to new artists, new content, and new voices."  Sounds a bit like many other social media sites--ho hum--but wait!  It's not just any other community site.  Once you create a user profile at MyCypher.com, you can instantly record yourself rapping or singing either directly from your mobile phone or using a computer microphone.  The audio is then saved and posted on the site. What's more, you can share your talent with the entire community worldwide  Who knows, you might gain a cult following.

One of the secrets to new business success is a great team.  On the surface, The MyCypher team's education does not seem to fit their business--6 MBAs and 2 JDs with degrees from Harvard, Penn, and USC--in fact, it might even suggest that they're a bit overqualified for what they're doing.  But here's the key--they collectively have over 30 years of entertainment experience. Industry knowledge - that makes this team a winner. Check out their site--www.MyCypher.com-- and tap into what's happening in the hip-hop world.
