Musings at the intersection of business and life

Making Green sexy

Business Savvy

As you may have noticed, I have posted a few times over the past year about the coming Green revolution in business. It's already well underway, and businesses of all shapes and sizes are getting on the bandwagon. Why? Because (1) customers increasingly want to buy Green products from companies that care about making the world a better place in which to live, and (2) companies are increasingly realizing that being Green can help attract quality employees, save money, and improve the bottom line.

There's only one problem: Green products have often been hung with the labels "dull," "boring," and "no fun." This is especially the case with cars which -- to achieve high gas mileage and low emissions -- are often powered by anemic 4-cylinder engines.

In the company's controversial Super Bowl ad, Audi poked fun at the coming Green future -- a future in which anyone who does anything un-Green will be harshly dealt with by the Green Police. So even minor Green infractions such as choosing a plastic grocery bag instead of a paper grocery bag, maintaining an overheated jacuzzi, or throwing a battery in the trash, earns the unlucky offender a pair of shiny handcuffs and a trip downtown. That's where Audi comes in. As the hero of the ad approaches an eco roadblock, an inspector quickly waves through his Audi A3 TDI "clean" diesel-powered car -- and the happy driver zips off into the sunset.

The message? Green can be both socially responsible AND fun.

So if you're a business owner or exec who is hoping to tap into the burgeoning Green market, you're already planning to do good for the world around you. That's great. But while you're doing that, don't forget to make it fun. Because Green + Fun = Profit.
