Musings at the intersection of business and life

Kevin Daum and Roar! moment of truth

Starting a Business
March 22, 2010 by Peter Economy

As you may have noticed, I have been following serial entrepreneur Kevin Daum's quest to attain New York Times bestseller status for his upcoming book Roar! Get Heard in the Sales and Marketing Jungle. The book is a sales book (specifically, a parable) based on the Passover passage about the wise son, the wicked son, the simple son, and the son unable to ask. Coincidentally, Passover starts in a week.

Kevin is quickly approaching his own personal moment of truth -- Roar will be released to the public in about three weeks. Only then will he know whether or not all the work he has put into publicizing the book, lining up speaking engagements to support it, doing the social media thing, and selling his value proposition to potential endorsers, sponsors, and other supporters will pay off.

Every entrepreneur knows the nervous anticipation that comes along with launching a new venture. You do everything you can think of to prepare to get your venture off the ground, but you can never truly be sure that it's going to take flight and gain altitude. But even so, you know that you've got to throw everything you've got into the effort. You've got to commit 110 percent. To do anything less will have you forever second guessing yourself, wondering if it might have been a success if you did JUST one more thing.

I have been watching Kevin from afar as he prepares for his moment of truth. And like the good entrepreneur he is, he has done and is doing everything he can possibly think of to turn Roar! into a success. I can see that it's now starting to come together. His speaking engagements are ramping up, as are his consulting gigs based on the ideas in the book. He's starting to generate buzz in the social media, and people are beginning to put his ideas to use in their own businesses (notably, a dating expert in Colorado is testing the Roar! methods for a program on how to pick up women in bars).

But as much effort as Kevin has put into the launch, he still doesn't know what will happen. The book may very well become a New York Times bestseller. Or not.

I do know one thing. Regardless of the outcome, Kevin will be able to look back knowing he did everything he could possibly do to achieve his goal. And that's the biggest hurdle of them all in the pathway to success.
